Wolves – where do they belong? – Game of the People

IT IS difficult to determine exactly where Wolves stand in the modern game. A bigger club than some of the current members of the top flight, a disastrous campaign in 2025-26 has sent them back to the Championship for their 27thseason in the second tier since they last won a major trophy.

There was no denying the 2025-26 season was a disaster for Wolves on and off the pitch. Two chairmen, two managers, some unsuccessful signings and an unenviable record in the Premier League. What’s more, there were continued rumours the club’s Chinese owners, Fosun International, were losing interest in their Midlands-based project. Fosun insisted they were as committed as ever, but with a paltry 20 points and three wins, Wolves plummeted into the Championship after eight years in the Premier League. The big question being asked in Wolverhampton is how long will they have to endure the second tier of English football and how do they ensure that, if they do return, to the Premier, 2026-27 will be looked upon as a temporary blip?
