I have a friend that lives and dies by the weather channel.
Sun, rain?
Will today be a good day…or a bad day?  Only the meteorologist can tell, and she’ll have to turn on the weather station to be told.

Or is there Another who predicts the forecast of our days?

Ask the Lord for rain in the springtime; it is the Lord who sends the thunderstorms.  He gives showers of rain to all people, and plants of the field to everyone.  ~Zechariah 10:1

Our Lord…the Creator of weather brings the weather.  And we can trust Him and trust in Him, regardless of whether it is raining or shining.

He is always reigning and shining.

But every one of us have fallen before a false idol before.  We’ve looked elsewhere instead of God for direction or purpose.

As a young adult, I can recall carefreely stepping out of the sunny bright of a coastal town sidewalk and into the darkened room of a boardwalk fortuneteller.

The Lord knows that we can naively/curiously/purposefully seek direction and comfort from dark corners, and He warns us against it:

The idols speak deceitfully, diviners see visions that lie; they tell dreams that are false, they give comfort in vain.  ~Zechariah 10:2 NIV

Or–as the New Living Translation of the Bible says it: Household gods give worthless advice, fortune-tellers predict only lies, and interpreters of dreams pronounce falsehoods that give no comfort (Zechariah 10:2 NLT).

Household gods“–what a perfect description of the mediocrity and impotence of the items and avenues that we so easily pour our hopes and worship into.

There is nothing run-of-the-mill or ordinary about our Lord, however.  He is the opposite (in power and truth) of every idol or household god.

God’s Word warns us today to step away from placing our trust and hopes in lame (ineffective) avenues of false power.

The idols speak deceitfully (Zechariah 10:2), but our Lord cannot lie.

  • in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time…  ~Titus 1:2
  • God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind. (18) So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie.   ~Hebrews 6:17-18

There is no deceit in our Holy God, and He does not lie.  His words, His promises, and His salvation over our lives is truth because He is Truth.

Why (even for a moment or a mood) would we place our hopes (and fears) and feelings in anything/anyone else but God?

The idols speak deceitfully, diviners see visions that lie; they tell dreams that are false, they give comfort in vain.  ~Zechariah 10:2

~~~
What are we worshiping in our lives?  What “god” are we bowing to?  Shaping our lives around?
Is it Jesus Christ?
What determines our days and our mood and our outlook for today and tomorrow?
Is it the Lord?
If we are honest with ourselves (and God)–our trust is often in other things, from medicine, to science, to love, to education, to self.  These are idols.  And they speak deceitfully.
The idols speak deceitfully, diviners see visions that lie; they tell dreams that are false, they give comfort in vain.  Therefore the people wander like sheep oppressed for lack of a shepherd.   ~Zechariah 10:2
Let’s stop wandering like sheep without a shepherd.  We have one, Brothers and Sisters in Christ.  We have the One.
 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.
(14) “Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. (15) Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.  ~Revelation 12:13-15
~~~

I don’t judge weather station watchers–it is nice to know the day’s forecast.  But we must know and trust that there is a better way to determine our outlook and the eventual outcome of our days.  There is a better Way.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.  ~John 14:6

~~~
Once or twice…or maybe more, we have searched in the wrong places for truth.
But:
the idols speak deceitfully,
diviners see visions that lie;
they tell dreams that are false, they give comfort in vain.
Therefore the people wander like sheep oppressed for lack of a shepherd.   ~Zechariah 10:2
There is only One that speaks truthfully, and who embodies Truth.
And the dreams that the Lord gives us are never false, but always true–if we will have the courage to trust Him and pursue them, rain or shine.
Blessings,
