Living the Heroic Life: What we need to teach our kids…
Often our lives can seem boring and unimportant. What we do each day may appear to be meaningless and have no greater impact.
Yet, the exact opposite is true.
Our lives do have meaning and purpose and every choice we make has infinite consequences.
We live right now inside a much bigger Story and our lives are all interconnected. What we do (as well as what we do not do), affects other people’s lives, which then has a domino effect across the world and into the future.
Nothing is wasted in the eyes of God.
The problem is that right now we are IN the story and we don’t always know it. We don’t know the end, or how everything will get resolved.
It reminds me of a passage from The Lord of the Rings, where Sam and Frodo talk about this precise issue:
I wonder if we shall ever be put into songs or tales. We’re in one, of course, but I mean: put into words, you know, told by the fireside, or read out of a great big book with red and black letters, years and years afterwards. And people will say: “Let’s hear about Frodo and the Ring!” And they will say: “Yes, that’s one of my favourite stories. Frodo was very brave, wasn’t he, dad?” “Yes, my boy, the famousest of the hobbits, and that’s saying a lot.”
But you’ve left out one of the chief characters: Samwise the stouthearted. “I want to hear more about Sam, dad. Why didn’t they put in more of his talk, dad? That’s what I like, it makes me laugh. And Frodo wouldn’t have got far without Sam, would he, dad?”‘
Have you ever thought about this reality, that you are IN a story? Or that some day stories will be written about you or told at the fireside?
What will your children say, or grandchildren say to the next generation about you?
This is something we all need to contemplate, as well as teach to our children, nieces and nephews. That they are currently IN a story and its up to them whether they will be the HERO and take up call the call to adventure.
Sometimes adventure won’t seem so glamorous, such as taking out the garbage or changing a baby’s diaper. Yet, the biggest adventure is simply responding to God’s call each and every day, following His will, no matter how mundane it may appear.
This reality is one of the biggest driving principles behind VOYAGE and why we feature a variety of HEROES in our comic books.
We want kids of every age to be inspired to BE THE HERO, and to think about what God is calling them to do in their lives.
We all need stories like these, because they remind us that life is a STORY and that we are currently in one right now.
