Van Acht: Why Insulated Garage Doors Matter

If homeowners think an insulated garage door is mainly about keeping the garage warm, they’re not alone. But unless the garage doubles as a workshop, gym, or another regularly used space, its temperature probably isn’t the thing that matters most.

According to the team at Van Acht, the more useful question is what sits on the other side of the garage wall.

In an attached garage, heat, sound and even moisture can have an impact on neighbouring spaces. A west- or north-facing garage door exposed to the afternoon sun, for example, can transfer heat towards an adjoining laundry or living area. In humid coastal conditions, condensation can become another consideration when warm air meets a cold metal surface.

Surprisingly, though, sound is often where insulation makes the most noticeable difference.

A single-skin metal garage door can act a little like a drum, amplifying the movement of rollers along the track, the motor and even rain or debris hitting the outside. If there’s a bedroom above the garage, or a home office, gym or workshop alongside it, that early-morning opening can suddenly feel much louder.

An insulated door behaves differently. Its core sits between two outer skins, helping to absorb vibration rather than allowing the panel to resonate. The same construction also slows heat transfer and gives the door greater resistance to dents and everyday knocks.

Material matters too. Timber naturally conducts heat far more slowly than aluminium, so within Van Acht’s range, the insulation conversation is particularly relevant when comparing aluminium constructions. Composite aluminium panels use a bonded core, while single-skin options may instead be chosen for their finish, texture or appearance.

Neither is automatically the better door. It comes down to the house.

For a detached garage storing little more than cars, bicycles and garden tools, additional insulation may offer limited practical benefit. But when the garage forms part of the home, it is worth considering the people and rooms nearby.

Because the real question isn’t whether the garage needs to be warmer. It’s whether the rest of the house would benefit from noticing it a little less.
