Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) plans to launch a new Civil Registration System (CRS) portal. This platform aims to make the process of registering births and deaths simpler and to speed up the issuance of certificates.
Recently, GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan conducted a meeting with officials to assess the procedures for birth and death registrations.
The upcoming CRS portal will enable citizens to register births and deaths online through a user-friendly digital system. During the meeting, officials were informed about the Registration of Births and Deaths (RBD) Act and how the new portal will operate.
The commissioner emphasized that prompt registration and quick issuance of birth and death certificates are key responsibilities of the civic body in Greater Hyderabad.
This initiative aligns with a recent legislative change. The Rajya Sabha has passed the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which had previously been approved by the Lok Sabha.
This amendment modifies the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, instituting a more rigorous two-tier system for late registrations. Registrations delayed by one to two years will still need authorization from a district magistrate or similar officials. However, delays over two years will now require approval from a Judicial Magistrate of the First Class.
This shift moves the authority for very late registrations from executive officers to the judiciary. With these changes, timely registration has become even more critical, and the new CRS portal in Greater Hyderabad is expected to facilitate faster certificate processing.
