#BOOKREVIEW: Connected: Networks for Kids, R.A Stephens (author), Tamlyn Teow (illus.), Wombat Books, April 2026.

Blurb:

Chloe has a dot on her shirt called a node. So do her friends and family. They are joined by lines called edges.

The edges spread out and connect people all around the world.

CONNECTED introduces children to the mathematical concept of networks, while emphasising that no one is alone.

Everyone is connected.

Review:

Picture books are such a great space for incorporating and introducing a wide range of themes, values and concepts for young readers to grasp and reflect upon. In this book, Connected ties the mathematical concept of networks with a heartwarming value of belonging, and it is completely refreshing!

Author R.A. Stephens’ analogous approach is also somewhat of a philosophical one – the people you know also know other people they can introduce you to, and ta-da, there is a new connection. Now imagine all the connections start at the base, or the node, and spread out along the edges to other nodes, forming a network of family, friends, neighbours, and so on — spanning all over the world. Through enthusiastic language, maths vocabulary, a gentle guidance, and questions to ponder, we meet Chloe and her growing (and growing) networks of connections. The visual representation of diagrams, footer notes and of course, the many different characters across the networks, couldn’t be done so brilliantly without talented artist, Tamlyn Teow. Her line and digital brush illustrations beautifully lend to the richness of diversity and inclusivity, clearly defining the details and concepts introduced, whilst at the same time evoking curiosity, playfulness and unity.

In such a big world, it’s reassuring for readers to take away an understanding of a sense of self and that they are not alone. And, with a different perspective, children can see how connections can foster a sense of humanity, kindness and compassion for people (and animals) all across the globe. This literal, metaphorical and conceptual educational tool on simplified graph theory beautifully loops in a circuit of love and belonging. Everyone should be connected with Connected.
