The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center is celebrating National Veterinary Technician Week, October 18-24, 2026. This annual observance recognizes the credentialed veterinary technicians whose skill, compassion, and expertise are essential to every veterinary healthcare team.
This year’s theme, “Credentialed Veterinary Technicians: Endless Compassion, Expert Care; Celebrating the Soul of Veterinary Medicine,” gives me the perfect opportunity to discuss AMC’s expert licensed veterinary technicians.
Keep in mind these essential members of your pet’s healthcare team go by many different names, as outlined in a previous blogpost about credentialed veterinary technicians.
Why Every AMC Technician Is an Expert
In New York State, veterinarian technicians must be licensed. Licensure requires a degree in veterinary technology, passing the licensing examination and, of course, paying a fee. To maintain their expertise as a technician, licensed veterinary technicians must also complete 24 hours of New York State-approved continuing education during each three-year registration period.
Veterinary Technician Specialists
Members of these academies earn the designation Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) in their chosen specialty area. To achieve specialty certification, these experts must hold a veterinary technician degree, log thousands of hours of work experience and demonstrate mastery of advanced clinical skills through a rigorous application process.
At AMC, we have eight veterinary technician specialists certified in Emergency and Critical Care, Anesthesia and Analgesia and Small Animal Internal Medicine.
Expertise Built Through Experience
The dictionary defines expertise as a high level of special skill, knowledge or professional know-how gained through training, study or practice. AMC’s veterinary technicians certainly meet this definition.
Not all AMC technicians hold recognition from a NAVTA specialty academy, but that doesn’t mean they are not experts. Many of our technicians combine years of hands-on clinical experience with their formal technician education.
AMC recognizes this type of expertise through our Advanced Clinical Technician (ACT) title. These individuals have 10 or more years of experience in a multi-specialty clinic, serve as leaders and mentors, exemplify AMC’s core values and actively participate in quality assurance programs.
As we celebrate National Veterinary Technician Week 2026, AMC salutes these compassionate experts who are the soul of veterinary medicine.
