Two Williamsport Breweries Revive Forgotten Pennsylvania Beer Style

Some beers are brewed to follow trends. Others are brewed to preserve history.

Williamsport breweries Rosko’s Brew House and John Ryan Brewery have teamed up to create A Night at the Rosk-bury, a Pennsylvania Swankey Ale that revives one of the Commonwealth’s most forgotten beer styles.

Pennsylvania Swankey dates back to the late 1800s, when German immigrant farmers in western Pennsylvania brewed this low-alcohol table beer using local ingredients. Traditionally, it featured barley, locally sourced molasses, a light addition of American hops, and star anise, creating a pale, highly drinkable ale with subtle spice and refreshing character. It was brewed for families and farm workers and enjoyed fresh rather than sold commercially.

This modern collaboration stays true to those roots. Brewed with Pennsylvania-grown malt from Deer Creek Malthouse, American hops, and yeast, A Night at the Rosk-bury comes in at 4% ABV and 14 IBUs. Expect subtle notes of molasses and star anise with flavors of sweet bread dough and pear in an easy-drinking beer that pays tribute to Pennsylvania’s brewing heritage.

With both breweries located in downtown Williamsport in the Pennsylvania Wilds, Rosko’s Brew House and John Ryan Brewery have created more than just a collaboration beer. They’ve brought a forgotten piece of Pennsylvania brewing history back to life.
